punkreviews:

Stars: 4.5/5
I first checked out You Blew It! when they played with my friend’s band, Belial, in the great city of Birmingham, Alabama at a venue called The Firehouse (RIP) last year. Their album entitled “Past In Present” is great and their EP is phenomenal but, neither of them come close to topping, “Grow Up, Dude”, The new album released on Topshelf Records.
The entire album is perfect, but my favorite tracks are Pinball House, Terry vs. Tori, Medal of Honor, I’m Bill Paxton, and A Noble Black Eye.
I’m pushed on time today so I’m gonna wrap this up by saying: Buy this album. It makes me think of The Early November, but if The Early November was better and had a Post-Rock vibe. My Favorite album of the year thus far!
Download the EP and “The Past In Present” Fo’ FREE here.
Buy “Grow Up, Dude” Digitally or on CD or Vinyl here.

PropertyOfZack Track-By-Track : : You Blew It!

propertyofzack:

You Blew It! released their great new album via Topshelf Records a few weeks ago, and PropertyOfZack is now very happy to be doing a Track-By-Track feature with the band to take fans behind the meaning of the songs on their record.  Check out what the band had to say about the songs on Grow Up, Dude below!

Grow Up, Dude
This song has like 4 lyrics. They’re pretty self-explanatory. Also artsy. Way, way artsy. RESPECT ME AS AN ARTIST YOU GUYS.

Pinball House
The lyrics to this song were actually written by our old bassist, Marc Ispass. He was on a trip through Tennessee with an old friend, but after he had to leave the band, we kind of changed the lyrics to reflect our feelings about going on tour. The title comes from the name of a house we played in Virginia Beach, VA on our second tour. It was the first time we ever saw a good physical reaction from a crowd.

The One With David
This song was written after a pretty long, frustrating back-and-forth between “the muse” and I. We met at her apartment to go to lunch, but then we more or less ended up sitting in her room and pointing fingers at each other. The next couple days were spent going back and forth between blaming myself and then subsequently blaming her for everything that had happened. I’d take different routes to class and neglect entire sections of campus that I had seen her at. Man, I’ve been to the bookstore like twice in the past year and a half, and I have a free coffee coupon for it. It’s terrible.

Terry v. Tori
This song is one of our favorite stories to tell, I think, but you’ve got to know a couple things about us first. Red beard and all, Tim is the most Irish human on the face of the Earth. His birthday is even on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s ridiculous. Him and I also live in a house called The Buffalo, named after Terry, a gigantic fake buffalo head that we keep mounted in the living room. On his birthday in 2011, we threw a pretty nutty party at our place. Our friends showed up with their friends, who showed up with their friends, who showed up with their friends. By that second or third degree, you’re dealing with total strangers, but they’re drinking your beer so like, that means they’re friends or something. I don’t know. I also feel like it should be noted that I’m a total square and think parties generally suck, so I spent the entire night a sober dad. Around 1am, I was sitting outside with Tim talking about nothing, when a friend of a friend of a friend stormed out of the house. I caught the door and walked inside to Terry lying on the floor. Tim and I mounted him back on the wall, and the party pretty much dispersed. The next morning, we come to find out that friend of a friend of a friend is named Tori, so I put some words about the incident over a song we had written. I was real mad.

First off: HOLY SHIT. Friday was unbelievable. We should have paid everyone there $5, not charged them, for the amount of fun you all brought. Seriously though, thank you so fucking much. Sorry about cursing, mom. But I really mean it. Sometimes you just have to use a curse word. Like in a song that’s really true and emotional.
This post is mostly a reminder that we’re playing shows all around Florida this week. Come hang out with us. We’re playing American Airlines Arena in Miami, Germain Arena in Estero, the 1-800 ASK GARY Amphitheater in Tampa and rounding it all off at Tinker Field in Orlando.
Just kidding. But we really are playing shows around Florida. That part isn’t a joke.
But that little flyer I whipped up has some information on the upcoming shows. As always, you can find information on our Facebook or our little make-pretend website. Yeah, we have a dot-com. Cool.
Also! Our wonderful friend Nicole came and hung out with us last night. She is great. She also was kind enough to take pictures of the entire show. Except for Teen Agers set. But who cares about them, amiright? I’m not. Here!
Dikembe
Great Deceivers
Go Rydell
You Blew It!
But being completely real, we are so absolutely grateful for all the sweat, love and rock n’ roll that was experienced last night. Oh, and all the beers you guys bought us. THANKS DAD!

You Blew It! -
Grow Up, Dude (Released 24th April 2012)

Arguably one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the year thus far, Florida’s You Blew It! have been spending the previous two years building up to this moment. Already firmly established within the twinkly 90’s emo-throwback genre, this is their first release on the highly revered Topshelf Records label. In a scene often dominated by EPs, splits and demos, the treat of a full 12 tracks from one of my favourite artists was insatiable.

However, I’d prefer to get this next part out of the way sooner rather than later, as an honest critique is what this record deserves. I was immediately struck by the gritty under-produced demo-esque sound. I believe this was the band’s intent, and don’t get me wrong, I can love that style; perhaps a rawness reserved for bands who are less skilled at their instruments. Yeah, some bands sound better this way. YBI! doesn’t. Indeed it appears they’ve shot themselves in the feet by releasing a far more polished version of ‘Terry v. Tori’, complete with a great video, last year. Band member Tim has since commented that “so many knobs” were used on that recording, and as we all know too well, recording is expensive. Admittedly though the low-fi approach sometimes masks true brilliance by smushing clipped vocals and inseparable guitars together. HOWEVER, let’s not get too hung up on this!

Several listens in, you actually grow into the mould of this record. Previously YBI! were on the whole a more contained and often serene affair. Whereas with Grow Up, Dude there’s an infectious boisterousness about them, typically only translatable in some tightly cramped sweaty basement where everybody chants along. After the brief, but trademark twangle, of opener ‘Grow Up, Dude’, we’re thrown into what feels like the front row, and now I’m chanting along “I was home!” (‘Pinball House’). Immediately this record is driven by the full band, and I’m struggling to take the amount of talent in. Slightly less twinkle and more emphasis on carefully orchestrated chord progressions timed with ever intricate percussive work. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into making chaotic crowd pleasers, while still maintaining an impressively melodic sound.

Vocalist/guitarist TJ does a great job fronting this band, with his unique vocal style, often reminding me of hoarser meld of Jonathan Dimitri (State Lines) and Steven Gray (Wavelets/Dikembe). I enjoy the layered vocals found on a lot of tracks, with contributions from the other band members, and stylistic sing-a-longs. Someone’s definitely been giving Tanner a lot of excuses, as he spews out lyrical content, cryptically bitter. Highlights obviously include the opening line of ‘Terry V. Torri’, “I’m usually not one to pick fights / but you’ve really crossed the line this time”, and the resentful ‘Medal Of Honour’, “I’m not a fucking trophy / but to you I might as well have been”. Though, it’s not all heart-on-your-sleeve hopelessness. There’s a running theme of self assurance and realisation, heard on the dreamy ‘The One With Marc’, and the reflective ‘I’m Bill Paxton’. As the record’s title suggests, this is indeed a soundtrack to growing up, complete with the touch of afterthought in the final line “when will I see that superstitions won’t do anything?”, to counter the opener. A previously unheard softness is presented on the track ‘The Fifties’; definitely a grower, in fact bringing to mind Nick Stutsman and his band Park Jefferson. More characteristic of YBI!’s previous work is the compelling “The One With David” - ‘IT’S NOT ME, IT’S YOU!’. Perhaps the perfect balance of this soft vs brash approach can be found on “Good For Bond, Bad For You”, with moments of contrast redolent of countless early 00’s emo acts.

Almost every song written by YBI! before GUD is longer than the longest track on this record (clocking in at a mere 3:33). Gone are the extended build-ups and intermittent intros comprised of guitar duets a la American Football, and in is a much more direct approach. I think we have to be careful with the constant urge to draw comparisons to bands of the 90’s, despite this being the premise of the genre. No one needs to ‘sound’ like someone else, if they genuinely don’t. YBI! have really grown into their own unique sound, with the best bits of the old and all the good bits of the new.

8/10
